A Simple Way to Screen Books Before Your Kids Read Them

A Simple Way to Screen Books Before Your Kids Read Them

If you're anything like me, you care deeply about what fills your children's minds — not just the toys they play with, but the stories they absorb.

I put so much thought into creating toys and story kits that bring Scripture to life with wonder and imagination. But when it comes to the books my kids pick up at the library, it can be hard to know what's inside before they start reading.

That's why I wanted to share a special resource my husband and I made:  Shelf Checkout.

It's an app that lets you scan any book's barcode and get an instant content analysis across 25 categories, things like violence, language, mature themes, occult/supernatural content, religious themes, and more. You set your own thresholds for each child, so what's appropriate for your older reader might be flagged for your younger one.

A few things we especially like:

  • - It covers ANY book with an ISBN — not just bestsellers
  • The analysis checks multiple trusted sources, not just one
  • - You customize the filters to match YOUR family's values
  • Series awareness warns you when content escalates in later books

For families who are intentional about faith and the stories that shape their children, it's a practical companion to the books on your shelf.

Check it out at shelf-checkout.com. It will officially be launched in a few weeks and you won't want to miss it!
