Butterfly Mobile

Butterflies are so fascinating to study, aren’t they? I don’t think I’ll ever quite get my head around the complete metamorphosis caterpillars undergo, or the huge variety of colors and sizes of butterflies that exist in the world!

Here’s a quick STEAM project that could be fun to pair with a study at home. I pulled this one from the Kid Lab archives (back when we studied bugs each spring). It’s one of my favorite go-to STEAM projects because it doubles as a toy and kinetic sculpture (giving room for rabbit trail lessons on the physics of motion, or the history of kinetic sculpture in contemporary art), and you can customize it to match any species of butterfly you’re studying.
